What is Frankincense?
" Use frankincense, for it heartens one and rids forgetfulness. "
Frankincense is derived from the gummy sap that oozes out of the Boswellia Sacra trees when their bark is cut. The leaking resin hardens and is scrapped off the trunk in tear shape droplets; it may then be used in its dried form or steamed to yield essential oils.
Frankincense has been investigated as a possible treatment for some cancers, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, anxiety and asthma, among other conditions. It’s safe to say that frankincense has many healing properties that our bodies need.
Almost all frankincense comes from western Oman. There, it is used for everything from deodorant and toothpaste to food and drink flavoring. Other cultures around the world have seen the benefit of frankincense first-hand, and now it is time that you get on board too!
An easy way to start is with frankincense resin water. But first, let us break down the difference between frankincense resin, frankincense essential oil, and fragrance oil.

Frankincense Resins and Essential Oils
" Frankincense comes in a number of forms including resins, essential oils and fragrance oils. "
Upon doing our own research, we, like many of you, started to get confused as to which one to use and what exactly the difference was. So, here is a little information that will hopefully help you out.
Frankincense resin is the actual sap that comes from the Boswellia Sacra tree after it is cut and then dried.
Frankincense essential oil is made by steam-distilling the raw resin.
Frankincense fragrance oils are usually artificially created with synthetic chemicals. Although they smell good and are typically less expensive, fragrance oils do not give you the therapeutic benefits of organic essential oils.

History of Frankincense
" Frankincense starts as a resinous sap inside a special family of trees (Boswellia Sacra) that grow almost exclusively in the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula in the Sultanate of Oman. "
Harvested frankincense is burned as incense because of its pleasing aromas, but historically it had a number of other uses as well:
- Almost all frankincense comes from western Oman, where it is used for everything from deodorant and toothpaste to food and drink flavoring.
- As frankincense grows almost exclusively in Oman, it has been a vital part of the Omani culture for millennia.
- Frankincense was so expensive in Europe that southern Arabia became known as Arabia Felix, “Arabia the Blessed.”
- As frankincense was in high demand from Europe to Asia, the kingdoms of southern Arabia became an integral part of global economy with shipping connections to India, the Mediterranean and the Silk Road.
- The Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Israelites and numerous other cultures used frankincense as part of their religious ceremonies.

Cancer Treatment and Boswellic Acid
" Frankincense can be used as a preventative treatment for cancer related and other medical conditions. "
Recap:
Frankincense is derived from the gummy sap that oozes out of the Boswellia Sacra trees when their bark is cut. The leaking resin hardens and is scrapped off the trunk in tear shape droplets; it may then be used in its dried form or steamed to yield essential oils.
Frankincense has been investigated as a possible treatment for some cancers, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, anxiety and asthma, among other conditions. It’s safe to say that frankincense has many healing properties that our bodies need.
What is Boswellic Acid?
There are four ‘boswellic acids’ in the frankincense resin (that are derived from Boswellia Sacra trees), these being the active ingredients.
It is claimed to have many benefits – in particular being an anti-inflammatory, which has been used in cases of arthritis, IBS and asthma with some success. Professor Thomas Simmet originally proposed that the Frankincense interfered with an enzyme which was involved in leukotriene production and thus inflammation.

Breast Cancer Treatment

With breast cancer, there is research showing that frankincense can bring about cancer cell death, and can prevent tumour growth in vitro.
Pancreatic and Bladder Cancer Treatment
Other studies show that frankincense may limit cancer spread in the pancreas and bladder:

Brain Cancer Treatment
The anti-inflammatory factor seems to help significantly and there are research studies involving a German neurosurgeon, Michael Winking, suggesting that Frankincense may reduce brain cancer spread in vitro, and in rats. There is another study suggesting it did not stop spread in humans.
One report covered in Cancer Watch, August 2010, showed it separated the cancer cell nucleus from the cytoplasm and brought about cell death. It had no effect on healthy cells.
Frankincense may react with other anti-inflammatory products like Ibuprofen.
Frankincense can increase blood flow in the uterus and thus menstruation and pregnant women are advised to avoid it.
